Event Recap - Twilight Zone: Bugs, Bats, and Beyond
Applegate After Dark presents The Twilight Zone: Bugs, Bats, and Beyond!
Hosted at the Provolt Recreation Site on September 23, 2024 from 7pm-10pm.
This event was a smashing success with full attendance! Thank you to all the presenters - Sam Dennis, Zia Fuduka, Emma Busk, Ethan Robison, Kyle Sullivan, Barbara Yates, and Mark Solomon! The crowd was super impressed and appreciative of your presentations, knowledge, expertise, and fun demonstrations.
This educational gathering was part of A Greater Applegate’s Jacksaphine Country Fair Week, and we appreciate all their hard work and the opportunity this provided to spread the word of Applegate After Dark further afield.
Here’s what happened:
7:00–8:00 PM – Twilight Zone Welcome - Cookies and comfy seating while experts presented on dark sky conservation, bats, moths, astrophotography, and the celestial sights to be explored later.
8:00–8:30 PM – Bat Walk - A guided walk with Bureau of Land Management (BLM) biologists along the river to observe bats in action.
8:30–9:00 PM – Moth Viewing - Nighttime pollinators with Pollinator Project Rogue Valley, with special techniques to attract and view moths.
9:00 PM–Late – Star Party & Astrophotography - Telescope viewing of Saturn, the Andromeda Galaxy, and more with hands-on astrophotography coaching.
The Provolt Recreation Site was a fantastic venue for this event. Many thanks to the Bureau of Land Management for making it available to us and participating so extensively. Another big thank you to the Provolt Volunteer Team members who helped plan and facilitate the event.
We are extremely grateful to the other collaborating organizations that made this event possible and provided dynamic presentations and invaluable information to those who attended, including Pollinator Project Rogue Valley.
One more shout-out to Applegate Partnership & Watershed Council Executive Director, Janelle Dunlevy, for lugging all the equipment out and back and making sure the evening lecture series went off without a hitch!
It’s always a special treat to look through a telescope and gaze at the stars; many kids got to experience that for the first time! The rings of Saturn and the Wild Duck Cluster were on stark display adding to the evening enchantment.
